Albert Brooks: Oscar nom for role in Drive?

Film District
The Hollywood Reporter says "The comedy icon could snag a second Oscar nod -- 24 years after his first -- for playing a murderous mobster in the acclaimed drama starring Ryan Gosling." Of course we'd love that. As played by Mr. Brooks, Bernie Rose is a character of the scariest, filthiest, most startling kind. The dirt on Bernie's hands doesn't wash off - it stays on you like a burn.

THR provided the Albert Brooks TIFF Interview here:

Driver's faux Patek Philippe Watch

We used to dislike Patek Philippe watches as sort of, well, not-worth £41,000 - and even less worth it in US green backs. We are man enough to admit when we are wrong...
"In the original book by James Sallis, Driver didn't own an awful lot," prop master Will Blount tells GQ.com. "One of the things he did own was this beautiful watch that he had been given by his father. So it was an important for the character that it be something memorable, something iconic." The decision, made by Blount with Gosling's input, was to go with a Patek Philippe with a brown leather strap.

An interview with Drive author James Sallis circa 2007

Yet another product from the great state of Arkansas, James Sallis has been pumping out the best pulp in fiction for some time. If you've not read any, then by all means, go Go GO! to your nearest book trader or civic library and procure.

You can read a good interview with him from 2007 here, conducted well before the movie.

Best line in the whole interview, is, of course, "...I also have the idea for another Drive-like novel, so...."

Driving Drive

Who wouldn't want to relive all the best moments from Drive? Now you can, thanks to the good people over at Movieline who got director Nicolas Winding Refn to walk them through the location, decision making and fun-facts behind the major scenes in the movie. Am I jealous? Yes. Yes I am.

It's nerdly awesome being able to go see the locations, but what's really great about this article - and probably so telling for all of us that love the movie so much - is this offhand quote from Director Refn:
Citing Kenneth Anger’s Scorpio Rising as his primary visual influence on Drive (and Pretty Woman as its fairytale-esque predecessor — “It’s a similar story where you take a very dark theme, morbid territory, and you blend it into a Cinderella structure”)
Wow. Really - wow.
